Mixed fish [Back to Aro Round 3] My Journal

Hi all,
i can see that many arowana forums have fallen silent, seem like the popularity of the hobby is declining.
my first aro was a Qian Hu Green which i kept for about a year when it suddenly died.
my second aro was an OTF RTG, which i bought unexpectedly. i was just roaming around pasir ris farms for supplies and walked into the OTF showroom. one caught my eye and as they were having some sales at that time. as i was still dishearted over my first aro that died. i decided to walk out of the shop. the whole night i was thinking about that aro and come morning i knew i had to bring it home..
after close to two years.. this RTG broke through my egg crates and landed on the floor.. it didnt survive.. another lesson for me..
that was 2013.. i think.. i dabbled abit into planted.. and decided to decomm that and get a brand new tank for a marine setup..
just a month back, i was too swamped with work with back to back events and i neglected my marine tank maintenance causing all of my SPS corals to bleach.. my heart tells me.. its time to step out of the salty world and ive been dreading the weekly maintenance and found it to be a chore, when its suppose to be fun in a hobby
i spoke to my tank maker and decided to make a cover for my tank... at least.. i will keep my options open.. i told myself.. maybe ill just keep guppies
in the midst of getting my freshwater tank ready, i went to Pasir Ris Farmway again to look for medias. while looking for new media, i stepped into Blue Crystal Aquarium
==comments==
decomm of the marine tank was tough, it took several water changes to get all the grim and sand out.
this was one of my final water change, when i was confident that the water was good enough to start introducing fishes. before that it was running fishless with fish food dumped in to kickstart the cycling process
my current tank is a shallow 4ft by 2ft tank.. and braceless.. this post a problem.. with a centre brace my options with my cover would be limited. and being a lower height, the hood must be a low profile design so that it doesnt overshadow the tank..
my tank maker also said, with this hood design i have to opt for a Submersible Light set.. like those u would use for arowana... i wonder if this was a sign?
i looked around for a suitable light side from c328 to pasir ris farmways.. and i cant seem to find the one with the correct color and budget.. i later on realise that i should get lights that best match my fish. not the other way around. at the same, looking around.. i found that there is not much stocks for arowana. when i was at c328 to look for my marine tank a year back.. there seems to be a great amount of arowanas from RTG to Reds. but most tanks are empty these days.. so i wondered, is the arowana hobby dead?
so fast forward to last saturday. i found a corner shop at 20 Pasir Ris Farmway 2. and decided to buy some media since i had a car for the weekend. ive heard of some reviews online about BCA and decided to pay a visit. not really intending to buy aro den but when in to enquire about a light set. i spoke with one of the boss and he showed me his light sets, and he asked an impt question, what fish do you want to keep? i told him im still cycling the tank and still not sure what fish to get..
he showed me around of the various fishes and one caught my eye.. despite being above my intended budget.. i mulled over it..
and no matter which other fish i looked.. that fish draws my attention back to it.. maybe it was meant to be.. love at first sight?
as my tank cover is not ready, i am unable to buy the fish yet. i paid for a white light set and put a deposit on my first crossback.
first a green , den an RTG.. now Crossback.. slowly going up the arowana ranks
and just yesterday, 20 March 2017. my tank maker delivered my hood!
my due to collect my fish in a few hours.. cant wait!
>i posted a repeat image in the previous post and i cant seem to edit the post..
>nice looking tank bro..
it would be perfect tank if the width is 3ft for just 1 aro on there right
>Welcome back to the hobby and all the best to your new setup
Think about this ... it is when we recount our memories of fish-keeping; all the losses and death, setbacks like equipment failures, sickness and diseases, etc. that brings us to todays experiences and knowledge.
For me, I have been keeping aro for about 10 years; still considers myself as a junior. I lost about 4 aros, if I can recall; 2 banjar red when I first started, lost them during wc, and 2 junior red, lost both of them due to sbf. Let go 1 red in a reservoir; shouldnt have done that, and give away 1 xb to a friend. Now, I am keeping an adult red and adult XB.
Your tank is ideal for 1 XB. If I can groom an aro into adulthood in a 4x1.5x1.5 tank just using sponge filter so can you. Personally I feel that it is our experiences and knowledge that counts; equipment and media are secondary, just to aid and facilitate the hobby.
A few pointers for you as startup:
1. ensure your new hood has strong cover to prevent young aro from dashing and jumping out
2. ensure your new hood has good ventilation so that hot air can escape
3. Submerging light may stress young aro ... observation is a must, look out for signs of stress and settle down; calm and swimming relax
Cheers looking forward to see more updates

My new hood has holes that also acts as a finger hold for me to lift up the planks
However im worried if the hole is too big and the aro might jump it through.. but comparing the size its highly unlikely.. so for the meantime im closing it with masking tape.
Yeap and will take note on the submerged lighting. If it shows signs of stress i will put it above water level so its not that bright
>Ive just got back from the farm and have collected the aro
After 1hr acclimatising. Released him in. Doing well and not skittish and no heavy breathing as well.. switched off the light in the meanwhile
>Welcome back bro. Very nice tank and xb u got there!

Another quick update. After about 4hrs i decided to switch on the light and everything still looks good.
The aro even started chasing the small tetras i had to test water but the tetras are too small and too fast, but that doesnt stop him from trying again and again.. So i tried dropping a small piece of MP with two sticks of Hikari aro food and he swallowed it whole.
So happy
