Setting up CA cichlid natural habitat

Setting up CA cichlid natural habitat AROWANA Forum ASIAN AROWANA,AROWANA,STINGRAY The1sheetHappened to see this past setup in my album and I thought of sharing my Central american cichlid Vieja Regani in its ‘natural habitat’。 I’ve always enjoy to aquascaping an aquarium to simulate as close to their natural setting。 To do up a natural rockscape high enough would be too heavy and costly。 And instead, decided to re-use my old diy rocks which happened to be still strong structurally and they were half the weight than the real thing as it also ease handling。 Some moon lighting effect at the background with daylight at the front to feature the inhabitant。

The left rock structure。
The right rock structure。
The final appearance after over-shaving the styrofoam。
Remove the excess styrofoam behind the structure using penknife or refillable butane lighter。
Applied thick layers of cement paste over the surfaces, dried between layers and heavy enough to weigh down the structure。
Removing excess styrofoam through intricate carving。
Leave the cemented structures to dry for a few days。
Final touched up with green and black cement to create algae-covered appearance。
The elongated rock in the picture is a floating piece to create some shade to comfort the fishes。

Btw, you can also build in your filter inlet into the DIY rock of your own design and size of the structure that can be fitted into your tank。
I had a prototype quite some time back, hope it would be of use to you。
Make a DIY rock mould to build in the inlet filter pipe。 Position it high enough to avoid sucking up the substrate。
Pour the cement paste over the mould。
Cover the mould with another piece of Styrofoam, bond it with cement paste。 Let it dry for a week。 Carve the design of the diy rock,MALAYSIA GOLdend Arowana apply thick cement。
Remove the stoppers from the inlet pipe。 Secure the black plastic mesh at the opening to the inlet pipe。
